The Bloodhound Gang - Paul Finn talks shite with Jimmy Pop...

It’s been a long ten years since the Bloodhound Gang first partied with us Aussies on our home soil. This massive, internationally successful band is finally making their way back to Australia to headline the festival Soundwave in February 2009. “I like to see the sites in different places, it’s always interesting! But the thing I am looking forward to the most is that Aussies are always ready to party with us until 5am or even longer. There would be a lot of you who would agree, I’m sure! There are not too many countries in the world that party like you guys!” It goes without saying really.

After having successful hits around the world, The Bloodhound Gang released four albums and played their set to an extensive international fan base. There have been many highlights in their career such as supporting some of the highest ranking names like Metallica and Slayer. In their career they have played alongside some of the biggest names in the music industry at festivals all over the world. “There is something cool about playing alongside the bands that you looked up to when you were growing up!” Jimmy says that they have been given a lot of awards for selling records. “We don’t really get a thrill from winning awards… We can hang them on our wall but who cares… What we really live for is the crowd response!” Since the beginning these guys have been having fun with the crowds and say that this is one of the contributing factors to their success.

The Soundwave festival will see The Bloodhound Gang playing in the major cities across Australia in February. There will be many people migrating and making their way down to catch the shows, but what about the rest of us up in North Queensland who will miss out? There are a lot of people up here who are fans of the Discovery Channel and would agree that one of their more popular tunes! It leaves many asking what do we need to do to get The Bloodhound Gang up to the North? “If we got invited, then yes, we’d be happy to come! We don’t often get invited to play in different places… Not really sure why that is, maybe promoters don’t like us or something like that. But yeah, if we could organise an independent tour, and if you want us there, then we’d love to come up to North Queensland!” The Bloodhound Gang has managed to play in many different places outside the normal touring circuit. “We were going to play in Kazakhstan about the same time that the movie Borat was released. It was a shame that the festival we were going to play at was cancelled.”

Currently, the guys in The Bloodhound Gang are working on a few new tracks and will be releasing a new album in the near future. Jimmy mentioned that if he writes a song a few years ago and reads it now, he may not necessarily like it anymore. “It’s important to keep it fresh. You’ve got to play what people want to hear!” Having had so many hits that have been popular the world over, many fans are anticipating the release of their new album. “The music biz is a hard one to predict. We’ve had a few hits in the past, but every band knows that new songs may not have the same impact that other songs have had. In this industry you just have to keep trying and keep moving forward. If the crowd likes it, then we will rock it. If not, then we will keep trying to find something that they like!”

This type of music has always been about having fun. Jimmy says there is no deeper meaning and this is not the type of music where you would try to sit down and reflect on your life. This is the type of music you put on while drinking beer with your friends. “We just have fun when we make and play our music. There may be people who use our music to reflect on their lives, although I’m laughing when I say this, I really don’t want to meet people like that! I don’t want to know them or their kids!” This type of music has been controversially popular internationally. In this specific genre, The Bloodhound Gang has stood alone and found that there are not many bands that are similar to them. “We don’t have very much competition and it’s probably the reason why we’ve had so much success. We are lucky to have had a career that has lasted so long.” ” The Bloodhound gang formed their band in 92 after realisation that the only way that five ugly guys could get laid was by being in a band. Lucky for them they started to become popular in 95 and have had it sweet since. “We are looking forward to getting our new album out!” Jimmy said proudly…

Known for their sometimes offensive lyrics, The Bloodhound Gang will completely let go of their shame to give their live shows and their fans something new. There is a somewhat off putting story to tell about a show that happened about two years ago. They had been playing in Copenhagen regularly and we were getting a little bored with our show. “Our base player came up with the idea… Basically the base player ‘shat’ on me on stage. I didn’t really want to go through with it… But people had paid to come and see it. When you do something like this, it doesn’t matter how much shampoo you use, your mind tells you that it is still there. I think I must have looked like someone who should be locked up… I was washing my hair about twenty times a day… for a long time! It’s good for a laugh, but dam!”

Jimmy was reassuring when he said that the somewhat off putting story was a one off event so don’t let that story put you off if it does. For fans of The Bloodhound Gang, it would be a good idea to make a weekend south and catch them at the Soundwave festival in February.
